St. Albert Gazette
Reporting the stories of a community
News, sports, arts and community journalism written for local readers during my reporting internship.
Overview
The St. Albert Gazette covers news and life in St. Albert, Alberta. As a reporting intern I wrote stories for local readers across beats: community and culture, health, sports, arts and explainers.
The published pieces below are all bylined to me on the Gazette's website.
My responsibilities
- Researched and reported stories for a local audience.
- Interviewed community members, athletes, performers and professionals, as quoted in the published articles.
- Fact-checked to uphold journalistic standards.
- Adapted writing for print and online readers.
Published articles
- Former St. Albert residents honoured for law enforcement work
- St. Albert martial artist steps onto global stage
- Chris Funk performing tonight at Arden Theatre
- Madagascar journey brings gift of sight to those in need
- Merchants top scorer sets team scoring record
- The history behind Random Acts of Kindness Day
- Taste of Africa celebrates five years of sharing culture, community
What this work shows
Taken together, these stories show range: a hard-news honour, a sports record, an arts preview, a health story with an international angle, a cultural celebration and an explainer. Each needed a different tone and structure, but all needed the same basics: accurate facts, real voices and a clear reason for local readers to care.
Taste of Africa, a story about community members of African descent celebrating and passing on their heritage, is one I'm especially glad to have told.
